The fast idle cam works with the choke linkage to hold the throttle slightly open when cold, then step the idle speed down as the choke warms up. If the cam is worn, cracked or missing the engine can idle too high, too low or behave inconsistently during warm-up. Fitting a replacement is a simple fix that can make a noticeable difference in cold-start manners.
